About this piece
A three-movement concerto for cello and chamber orchestra (double winds, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, percussion, harp and strings), composed in 1998 and revised in 2001. It was commissioned by David Lemon with Canada Council support for the Vancouver New Music Festival and was the first of several works Schmidt wrote for cellist Shauna Rolston. The movements run Adagio-Allegro, a Cadenza leading to an Adagio, and a closing Allegro, about 30 minutes in all; the orchestra opens alone with a quiet, solo-string texture before the soloist enters.
