About this piece
A single-movement fantasy of about 12 minutes, commissioned by the Harvard Musical Association and premiered in Boston in April 2006 by cellist Shauna Rolston with the composer at the piano. It was the third piece Schmidt wrote for Rolston, after the Cello Concerto (1998) and Icicles of Fire (2003). The composer's note points out that the widely spaced double-stop tenths that open and close the work were new to her style; the middle section sets long, high cello lines against fast, repeated piano figuration in the extreme registers. Rolston and Schmidt recorded it on the album Icicles of Fire (Centrediscs, 2013).
