About this piece
A sonata for cello and piano of about 12 minutes, commissioned by Arizona Friends of Chamber Music and premiered in Tucson on 16 March 2016 by cellist Clive Greensmith and pianist Bernadette Harvey. In her program note Schmidt explains that the Latin title means 'of or pertaining to the sun', and that the piece explores the contrast between the sun's immense power and the delicacy of a single beam of light. It unfolds as one arc, starting quietly, building to a dramatic climax and returning to the soft opening material.
