About this piece
A sonata for cello and piano of about 20 minutes, written in 1992 for cellist Jeremy Findlay; the composer's works list names St. Basilica Church as commissioner, and the CMC copy credits Father Malowany. Findlay premiered it with the composer at the piano at Toronto's Jane Mallett Theatre on 20 March 1992 and later released it on a CD made in Czechoslovakia. The cello writing is freely lyrical, moving through tenor and treble clefs with ad libitum passages and rhythmically driven sections in shifting meters such as 7/16 and 6/16.
