About this piece
A four-movement work for unaccompanied cello (about 12 minutes), commissioned by the Women's Musical Club of Toronto for cellist Kaori Yamagami, who premiered it at Walter Hall, University of Toronto, on 20 November 2008. The movements follow a slow-fast-slow-fast plan: a Prelude subtitled 'forget-me-nots' in memory of the cellist Kristine Bogyo, a playful Scherzo inspired by the composer's kitten, an improvisatory Intermezzo that ranges from the bottom to the top of the instrument, and a fast closing Toccata. Vernon Regehr recorded it on his solo-cello album Full Spectrum (Centrediscs, 2012).
