About this piece
Lucid Dreams is a twenty-minute, three-movement cello concerto commissioned by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra while Morlock was its composer-in-residence. It was written for and dedicated to Ariel Barnes and to music director Bramwell Tovey, who premiered it with the VSO at the Orpheum in Vancouver on 6 May 2017. In the composer's note, the piece explores the strange logic of dreams, where the unfamiliar feels normal, moods change suddenly and an ideal world can turn surreal. The solo cello acts as the dreamer moving through the orchestra's half-asleep soundworld. The orchestra is small: single winds, two horns, timpani, two percussion, harp and strings.
