About this piece
This is the Colour of My Dreams is a one-movement cello concerto in four sections, commissioned by the CBC for Shauna Rolston and written between January and June 1997 (revised 1998). The title comes from Joan Miró's painting 'Photo: Ceci est la couleur de mes rêves', a single blue smudge above handwritten words. In Murphy's note the cello plays the dreamer, who calls up the dream, chases it, is worn out by it and finally understands it. The soloist is often alone or answered by the orchestra rather than accompanied, with combative duets against solo violin, xylophone and cello. Rolston recorded it with the CBC Radio Orchestra under Mario Bernardi.
