About this piece
En el escuro es todo uno ('In the dark, all is one') is a twenty-minute double concerto for harp, cello and orchestra. Murphy wrote it as winner of the 2018 Azrieli Commission for Jewish Music. It draws on Sephardic music and follows how that music absorbed local traditions in the places Sephardic Jews made their homes, such as Morocco, Tunisia and parts of Europe. Its four movements are 'Lamenta', 'Si veriash a la rana', 'Cadenza Yigdal', and 'Noches, noches, buenas noches; Ven chika nazlia'. Erica Goodman (harp) and Rachel Mercer (cello) premiered it with an expanded McGill Chamber Orchestra under Yoav Talmi at the Maison symphonique de Montréal on 15 October 2018. The work is dedicated to Dr. Sharon Azrieli. The duo Couloir recorded it with the Orchestre classique de Montréal under Boris Brott for Analekta's New Jewish Music, Vol. 2 (2019).
