About this piece
A three-movement concerto of about ten minutes for solo cello with oboe, violin, viola, second cello, double bass and piano, written in 1966 at the request of George Finckel, Fine's cellist colleague at Bennington College. Fine reworked material from a planned cantata on texts by Alcuin, W. H. Auden and Abelard, and a short passage from those texts heads each movement: Recitative (A Sequence for St Michael), Declamation (Prayer) and Lament. It opens with a cello recitative, and in the closing Lament the cello and oboe take turns as soloists. The premiere was in 1979 at Windham College, Putney, Vermont, with Finckel as soloist and Fine conducting.
