About this piece
A four-movement sonata of about 13 minutes from 1986 (Poco lento – tempo giusto; Elegia; Allegro; Con piena voce), written as a tribute to Debussy. Fine's note to the score says it was sparked by Benjamin Britten and Mstislav Rostropovich's recording of Debussy's Cello Sonata. Her own musical language is quite different, but she set out to capture something of that work's textures and drive and hid a brief quotation from it in the first movement. Maxine Neuman and Joan Stein gave the premiere in New York in March 1988.
