About this piece
An elegy of about six minutes for four cellos, or any multiple of four, written in 1987 in memory of George Finckel. Finckel was Fine's longtime colleague at Bennington College, played many of her works, and his cello class inspired her Missa Brevis for four cellos and taped voice. A sustained Adagio frames a central section of bowed tremolo harmonics, and the return of the opening adds an expressive line that recalls the 'Lacrymosa' of the Missa Brevis. Fine conducted the first performance at Bennington in September 1987 with sixteen cellists, among them David, Michael and Chris Finckel.
