About this piece
A two-movement work for cello and piano, about seven minutes long. The Aria began in 1982 as the slow middle movement of Hoover's Serenade for clarinet and string quartet; in her note she says it was first meant for adult amateurs and that its simple, lyrical line suited the cello. In 1985 a cellist friend asked for a companion piece, and she added the Allegro giocoso, a quick, light-hearted movement in which cello and piano trade ideas back and forth and the cello uses a few effects specific to the instrument.
