About this piece
El Andalus, for cello and piano, was commissioned by the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music for Sharon Robinson and premiered in Tucson in 2004. The title is the Arabic name for medieval Andalusia, which Robinson suggested as a subject because of its history as a meeting place of Muslim, Christian and Jewish learning. Hoover blends the scales, slides and quarter-tones of Arabic music with Western harmony, opening with a fragment of Gregorian chant; performances run roughly 13 to 15 minutes. A version for viola and piano also exists.
