About this piece
Noir Vignettes is a four-movement suite inspired by 1940s American film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale and Last Cigarette. Garrop wrote it in 2014 for double bassist Michael Cameron, commissioned by the University of Illinois Research Board for his Sonata Project, and then made her own versions for cello and piano and for tenor saxophone and piano. Each movement sketches a stock element of the genre, from its shadowy, menacing atmosphere to the femme fatale, and the cello version runs about 13 minutes.
