About this piece
A City Suite for cello and piano, commissioned by the Southampton Chamber Music Festival, traces New York's social history in three dances: Hester Street Waltz, Fifth Avenue Cakewalk and 57th Street Tango. It began with the tango, which proved popular enough that Kander was asked to expand it into a suite. In her note she describes the first movement as Lower East Side klezmer for the cello, the second as 1930s-40s high-society dancing that the pianist eventually disrupts, and the third as the bustle of the Carnegie Hall stretch of 57th Street. The suite lasts about 12 to 13 minutes.
