About this piece
Concertpiece is a single-movement work of about eight minutes for cello and piano from the mid-1970s, which the composer described as lyrical but virtuosic, with a piano part that complements the soloist. It opens with a forceful high cello gesture that drops to a long low note, then alternates an expressive slow section with a faster one built on high-register writing, pizzicato and changing meters. Van de Vate also scored the piece for cello and small orchestra with celesta, piano and percussion (1978); that version was premiered in Boston by cellist Betsy Goy with the New England Women's Symphony.
