About this piece
An unaccompanied tribute to the Catalan cellist Pau Casals, commissioned by the American cellist David James Kim, who premiered it at the Mas i Mas Festival in Barcelona on 7 August 2015. It is built on El cant dels ocells (The Song of the Birds), the Catalan Christmas song that Casals made famous as a symbol of peace. The song's opening rising scale recurs as a motive throughout the piece, and the full melody appears only at the end. The composer revised the piece after the premiere, and Hofmeister publishes it.
