About this piece
Song on Mount San Angelo is a single-movement piece for unaccompanied cello that the composer calls her first "official" composition. She wrote it in the summer of 1995 as a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (Mount San Angelo), shortly after finishing at the Yale School of Music, as the music for a multimedia project with her husband, the painter Alexander Anufriev, in which six giant angel banners were lit one by one. A slow, quiet opening of sustained two-voice writing grows to a more vigorous centre; the composer notes that its main challenge is the unbroken bow control needed to sustain a long melodic line.
