About this piece
September 11 is a chaconne for unaccompanied cello written soon after the attacks of 11 September 2001 and dedicated in the score to the innocent people who died that day. The composer premiered it at her recital at the Washington Hebrew Congregation in Washington, D.C. in October 2001 and recorded it on her 2002 Concert in Moscow album; she revised it in 2017, lengthening it and expanding the climax. She describes the piece as mournful but ultimately life-affirming rather than despairing, and has also performed it under the title Requiem for the Innocent.
