About this piece
Sufi Suite is a two-movement work for unaccompanied cello in scordatura, inspired by the poetry of the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. The composer wrote it in the summer of 2005 and premiered it in 2006 at the Roerich Museum in New York; it appears on her 2007 CD Sufi Soul. The first movement, After Rumi, is a flowing arabesque-like prelude, and the longer second movement, OM, has the cellist chant while playing and moves into the complex rhythms of a Sufi dance. The lowered tuning (C-G-D-G) means it pairs naturally with Bach's Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor.
