About this piece
Adonai is a single-movement work for solo cello and string orchestra, dedicated to the composer's Moscow Conservatory cello professor Igor Gavrysh. The composer describes it as a meditation on the divine origin of the human soul, and her note on the work quotes the opening verse of Psalm 110. The composer was the soloist at the 2006 premiere in a Moscow Conservatory hall, with players from the Russian Chamber Orchestra under Igor Lerman, and she recorded it on her album Sufi Soul. The solo part sits largely in the cello's high register, singing over a quiet, sustained string accompaniment.
