About this piece
Icelandic Ballad for cello and piano is a theme with ten variations based on a 14th-century Icelandic hymn associated with the poem Lilja (c. 1340). The cello introduces the plain modal tune alone in pizzicato before the piano joins, and, according to the composer, the variations trace the history of Western music from the medieval period to the future. The composer and pianist Lydia Frumkin gave the premiere in the Washington, D.C. area in October 2007, followed by a European premiere at Salurinn Hall in Reykjavik later that autumn. The edition includes the full score and separate cello and piano parts.
