About this piece
Caravan is a concert duet for two cellos that takes the image of a caravan's long journey as a metaphor for life. The composer wrote it for a 2007 Moscow concert with her former professor Igor Gavrysh: she premiered a first version with Paul Katz in Maryland in April 2007, then the final version with Gavrysh at the Moscow Conservatory's Rachmaninov Hall a month later. A driving ostinato of repeated 16th notes passes between the two parts beneath answering melodic lines, and the parts are equally demanding. Carrie Koffman's arrangement for two saxophones was chosen as the favourite composition at the 2012 World Saxophone Congress.
