About this piece
Homage to Janos Starker is a short piece for unaccompanied cello written in 2013 after the death of the Hungarian-American cellist, whom the composer admired for his lean, expressive sound; Starker had praised her recording of Bach's violin sonatas and partitas on the cello. She says the piece came to her almost complete, and she premiered it in July 2013 at the P. Buckley Moss Museum in Waynesboro, Virginia. The score's motto reads "a true legend never dies - its influence increases with time", and she hears traces of Starker's Jewish-Russian roots, Hungarian youth and virtuosity in the music. It opens Lento with a passage in natural harmonics.
