About this piece
Farela is a single-movement duo for cello and piano whose title spells out the three pitches F, D and A (fa, re, la), which return as a motto throughout and especially at climaxes. The composer began it in 2015 as a light, minimalist encore for herself and pianist Pi-Hsun Shih, but it grew into a 15-minute virtuoso piece in which the piano and cello have equally dramatic parts. The fast outer sections have touches of flamenco around a slower, more lyrical middle section. Anisimova and Shih premiered it in November 2015 on the Promisek concert series in Bridgewater, Connecticut.
