About this piece
Teacher is a work for nine cellos dedicated to Zoia Kamysheva, the composer's first cello teacher, who later moved from the USSR to Mexico. It was written for Kamysheva's 80th-birthday celebration and premiered by her Mexican students at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in August 2017. The composer describes the free-form piece as her portrait of Kamysheva as a brilliant teacher and surrogate mother, with polyphonic writing and syncopated rhythms; the Russian folk song "The Red Robe", which Kamysheva taught her as a child, appears at the golden-section point of the piece.
