About this piece
This four-movement suite for unaccompanied cello (Prelude, Fughetta, Intermezzo, Finale) was written in 1982. Its first and fourth movements were the required piece for cellists at the 7th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow that year. Cellist Yuriy Leonovich, who has written about the piece, notes that the whole suite grows from a three-note motif, C–D–C. The Prelude runs straight into a two-voice fugue, the Intermezzo is a slow waltz carried by double stops and chords, and the Finale is a showpiece in perpetual sixteenth notes.
