About this piece
A three-movement sonata for unaccompanied cello, written in spring 2003 for and dedicated to Henri Demarquette, who gave the first performance in Ancy-le-Franc (Burgundy) on 3 July 2004 and later recorded it. Each movement turns the letters of his name into musical pitches: a slow, ornamented first movement in the manner of a vocalise, a fast–slow–fast second movement whose slower middle section lies high on the instrument, and a closing tiento, a Renaissance Spanish contrapuntal form that the composer combines with virtuoso writing.
