About this piece
A five-movement suite for unaccompanied cello composed in May 2012, dedicated to the cellist Odile Bourin and written in memory of the composer's son Paul, who died in 2011. The composer describes it as following the tradition of Britten's three solo suites. Three movements draw their themes from the musical letters of the name Paul, including a fugue in the third movement; the second movement is played entirely pizzicato, and the finale recalls the opening movement in its coda. Bourin gave the first broadcast performance on France Musique on 26 January 2014.
