About this piece
A four-movement quartet for four cellos (2017), commissioned by the Festival des Arcs and premiered there in August 2018. The title refers to the paintings of Nicolas de Staël, particularly the primary colours of his last years (1950–55); the composer links this to the idea that each cellist has a distinct colour, and each part gets solo passages. The first and third movements are slow and lyrical, the second is entirely pizzicato, and the finale mixes pizzicato, arco and col legno.
