About this piece
Firsova wrote this three-movement sonata (Allegro moderato, Vivace, Sostenuto – Animato) in early 1971, during her first year at the Moscow Conservatoire. In a note posted with a YouTube recording by the dedicatee and the composer, she says she was then drawn to Britten's Cello Sonata and that its influence can be traced here. It is dedicated to the cellist Anatole Liebermann, who gave the premiere at the Leningrad Conservatoire on 8 April 1972 with the composer at the piano, and it was printed in Moscow in 1979 in the anthology 'Concert Pieces by Soviet Composers for Cello and Piano', Vol. 1.
