About this piece
Firsova's first cello concerto is a single-movement work of about 18 minutes, composed in 1973 while she was a student at the Moscow Conservatoire. The orchestra is modest in winds but has a large percussion section for five players (temple blocks, bongos, tom-toms, glockenspiel, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba) plus harp and celesta. Anatole Liebermann gave the premiere at the Moscow Conservatoire on 10 June 1975, conducted by Veronika Dudarova; he later commissioned her fourth cello concerto, the Concerto-Elegy (2008).
