Technical overview
From Association of Canadian Women Composers: "Large intervals in the cello melody create a poignant effect. The piano part mirrors this with large harmonic intervals, and perfect 4ths are featured prominently. The underlying harmonic progressions are variants on subdominant-dominant-tonic harmony, but with more complex chords, reminiscent of the idiom of Alexander Scriabin. In the B section, the cello accompanies the piano; an early introduction to ensemble playing. “Prelude,” “Cantillation,” and “Danse Energique” are often performed as a set."
