About this piece
A single-movement cello concerto of about 17 minutes in memory of Mstislav Rostropovich, commissioned by and dedicated to Anatole Liebermann, who had premiered Firsova's first cello concerto in 1975. In her programme note, Firsova explains that the main material comes from her solo piece For Slava, so a funeral-march rhythm runs through the whole work, and that the second theme takes its rhythm from Lensky's aria in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Liebermann gave the premiere in London on 18 February 2011 with St Paul's Sinfonia.
