About this piece
A seven-minute solo cello work, the fifth in Jolas's series of nine 'Episodes' for different solo instruments and the first of them written for a string instrument. In her program note (quoted in the Tribeca New Music video description) she says she chose to stress "the exceptional lyrical qualities of the cello" rather than virtuosity, within a tightly controlled structure; that structure is built from the notes of a congratulatory message she sent the director Antoine Vitez on his appointment to the Théâtre de Chaillot. Sonia Wieder-Atherton gave the premiere at the Salle Gaveau, Paris, on 17 January 1985.
