About this piece

A short 'sound poem' for cello and piano, written in January 2001 for pupils in music education; the composer grouped it with her student pieces Heksen and Regenboogje. It begins as a light Allegretto scherzando in 3/4 with a repeated opening, then turns to a slow, expressive Grave and a flowing Andante con moto. It was recorded and broadcast on NCRV radio as part of the project 'Onbekend maakt Onbemind'.

Technical overview

The cello part stays mostly in the lower positions, with occasional shifts up to D4 and E4 on the A string, quick pizzicato-to-arco changes, short slurs with tenuto and staccato, and several changes of tempo and meter against an independent piano part.

  • Combine extensions with shifting.
  • Consistent vibrato on sustained notes with speed variations.

Right Hand

  • Bow arm gains finesse and speed.
  • Introduce controlled spiccato.
  • Sautillé appears in rapid passages.
  • Expand legato into longer, sustained lines.
  • Practice advanced articulations (martelé, refined string crossings).
  • Add complex strokes for double stops/chords.

Bow Strokes

  • Use context‑appropriate strokes: legato, spiccato, martelé.
  • Subtle bow changes during string crossings.

Rhythm & Musicality

  • Increased challenges: sixteenths, dotted rhythms, syncopation, contrasting subdivisions.
  • Emphasize expression with crescendos/decrescendos & vibrato.
  • Balance technical precision with emotional delivery.
