About this piece

A one-page miniature for unaccompanied cello, reworked in 2020 from an earlier piece for solo viola. In her note the composer explains that the title refers both to the changing time signatures and to the different kinds of longing felt at different stages of life. Its slow, free-flowing lines are built from open-string fifths, sustained sixths and short chromatic phrases.

Technical overview

Mostly in the lower positions, the piece combines sustained double stops (many against an open string), short glissandi and bowed tremolo, with a new meter almost every bar.
