About this piece
A short, dense solo written for Frances-Marie Uitti, who premiered it at Issue Project Room, New York, in February 2011. It uses Uitti's two-bow technique: the cellist holds two bows in the right hand, one bowing the strings normally from above and the other bowing the two outer strings from underneath, so that all four strings can sound at once. Bielawa's note says the mood comes from a 'blue' Christmas she and Uitti spent together in Rome, both the consolation and the fun of it. Near the end the cellist detunes the lowest string while playing.
