About this piece
An eight-minute work for cello and piano, commissioned by Tony and Caroline Marriott to mark the 300th anniversary of Guy Johnston's Tecchler cello and premiered by Johnston and Tom Poster at the Hatfield House Chamber Music Festival on 25 September 2015. Bray turned the cello maker's name, David Tecchler, into musical pitches that underpin the harmony, and also drew on images of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Perseus galaxy. After a short introduction, it ranges from sparse, delicate writing and a driving passage marked 'White heat, luminous' to a lyrical high cello melody and a calm, slow close.
