About this piece
Bray's 21-minute cello concerto, commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and premiered at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall on 14 August 2016 by Guy Johnston with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo. She began it in August 2015 on the day she read that the so-called Islamic State had destroyed temples at Palmyra, and a documentary about the photojournalist Tim Hetherington, killed in Libya in 2011, shaped it further. The piece cuts between adrenaline-filled 'conflict' sections and numbed 'life at home', joined by eerie interludes suggested by a helicopter's hum or the ringing in the ears after an explosion. It is scored for full orchestra with harp and three percussionists; her solo cello piece Different Realities (2020) reworks much of the same material.
