About this piece

An 11-minute single-movement piece for solo cello and twelve strings, commissioned by the First 100 Years project to mark the centenary of the 1919 Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act, which let women become lawyers in the UK. Natalie Clein premiered it with the Aurora Orchestra under Duncan Ward at Kings Place, London, on 14 December 2019. The title comes from Maya Angelou's poem Still I Rise, and Bray also took inspiration from Drago Tršar's sculpture Amidst the Powerful and the Powerless; in four linked sections the cello leads the ensemble with mostly rising lines.
