About this piece
An eight-minute unaccompanied piece, one of the 200 solo works commissioned for the Royal Academy of Music's 2022 bicentenary; Shannon Ross gave the first performance at the Academy on 10 November 2020. It reworks material from Bray's cello concerto Falling in the Fire and shares its subject: the destruction of Palmyra and the experience of the photojournalist Tim Hetherington, switching between violent 'conflict' music and a numbed, fragile 'life at home'. The opening, marked 'Defiantly', alternates fff outbursts with soft, sustained high notes.
