About this piece
Impromptu is a seven-minute unaccompanied work written in 2001 for Matt Haimovitz on a commission from the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, where he gave the premiere that August. The piece is an extended contrapuntal treatment of the fugue subject from Bach's Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor, framed by freely paced sections; according to the publisher's note, a final run up into the cello's highest register leads the music to unwind back to its opening, palindrome-fashion. Haimovitz recorded it on his 2003 album Anthem, and the composer also made a version for solo viola.
