About this piece
Sarabande is an unaccompanied work written in 2009 for Matt Haimovitz, who premiered it on 1 February 2009 at the Winnipeg New Music Festival. Written as a memorial, it takes its pulse from the Baroque sarabande, with the weight falling on the second beat of three, and moves through starkly contrasting moods. Much of it is very quiet, using sul tasto, flautando and harmonics, with trills and tremolos between pitches. Haimovitz recorded it on the albums Figment (Oxingale) and Orbit (PENTATONE Oxingale Series).
