About this piece
Max's Moon is a two-movement work for solo cello and string orchestra (2007, revised 2009), commissioned by the Minnesota Sinfonia for Matt Haimovitz. Minnesota Public Radio reported that it was inspired by the couple's baby daughter and by the picture books Where the Wild Things Are and Goodnight Moon. The first movement is a boisterous romp built around a lumbering dance, and the second is a gentle lullaby in which the cello sings over a distant background melody.
