About this piece
A Boy and a Makeshift Toy belongs to Kouyoumdjian's Children of Conflict series, sonic portraits based on photographs of children in war zones by the photojournalist Chris Hondros. It portrays a boy playing in an abandoned train station crowded with Albanian refugees from Kosovo in 1999. Composed in 2015 for violist Michael Hall, it was arranged for cello and piano in 2018 at the request of cellist Ani Kalayjian. The single movement lasts about eight minutes.
