About this piece
The Heaviness of Air is a five-minute piece for amplified cello and pre-recorded audio playback, written as a dance collaboration with choreographer Helen Simoneau. It was commissioned for Periapsis Music and Dance's Portrait Project, a set of six works for one dancer and one musician, and was premiered by cellist Aminda Asher and dancer Isaac Owens at GK ArtsCenter in Brooklyn on 18-19 February 2016. In the composer's description, it imagines briefly what life with restricted movement could be like. A performance needs cello amplification and a playback system for the fixed audio track.
