About this piece
and there was is a short piece for a solo cellist who also performs a vocal part, commissioned by Bang on a Can for cellist Arlen Hlusko. Its text comes from playwright Dominic Finocchiaro's play Found Dog Ribbon Dance, beginning with the line "and there was this space where that something used to be" (quoted on the composer's site). Cellist-singer Bryan Hayslett recorded it on his album Cello Unlocked (Neuma Records, 2024), a collection of works for a singing cellist.
