About this piece
A continuous fifteen-minute work for amplified solo cello, written in December 1994 during a residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts for cellist Craig Hultgren, who premiered it at Auburn University in Montgomery in 1995. The amplification is part of the design: it brings out effects that would not carry acoustically, alongside virtuoso passages inspired by Hultgren's playing. The piece falls into three sections, each faster in tempo but with longer note values than the last, moving from aggressive through percussive to quiet and still. It won the 1995 NACUSA Young Composers' Competition; the title (read 'drowning by numbers') nods to Peter Greenaway's film and to Louis Andriessen.
