About this piece
A concerto-length work for cello and orchestra written in 1999 in memory of the composer's father, William Murphy Hindman (1922–1999). The title comes from Paul's letter to the Romans (8:26), in which the Spirit intercedes 'with sighs too deep for words'. It was commissioned by cellist Craig Hultgren, conductor Thomas Hinds and the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra, who gave the premiere in Gadsden, Alabama, on 6 April 2000.
